Your Mom Goes to College

No new updates in one month... I am such a slacker!! I will definitely work on updating more often!

Well, the big news for me is that I just got a new apartment yesterday and I will be able to move into it sometime this week. The people that I had been living with and I decided that we need to separate… so on Friday night I stayed with a friend of mine and then Saturday I got the new apartment. My friend is letting me stay with them until my place is available. I sent out an email with my new address on it… if I was terrible and forgot to include you please let me know and I will give you my new address.

So, now I get to go shopping!!! Oh so terrible, right. LOL. Ikea opens up here in Atlanta on the June 29 so I am very excited about that. Also, there are Pottery Barns and other really nice furniture stores downtown so I am sure I will have a ton of fun picking out new things.

Finally Updated

Oh my... it has been so long since I have updated this blog!! Well, a lot of things have happened in the past few weeks...

Two weeks ago I went downtown to Piedmont Park and spent the afternoon enjoying the beautiful weather. The park is beautiful as well. It is about 2 miles outside of downtown Atlanta so it has the city as the back drop, which I love!! There is a pond in the center of the park and when I was there, there was a man singing and playing guitar on one end with a microphone so you could hear the music through out the park. It was very relaxing and a lot of fun.

Then, the Thursday after that, one of my roommates and I went to Fox Theater and watched Disney's "On the Record"... which was fabulous!! The show is a compilation of Disney songs. It was a lot of fun to hear a different mix of the Disney songs that I already knew. My favorite was when they sang the song "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast but they sang it in many different languages!! It was amazing to hear the song that you know but with a twist!

This weekend I went with a friend from work to Six Flags here in Atlanta. We may have picked the wrong weekend (Memorial Weekend) because it was packed but we had a lot of fun! We were there about 6 hours and were only able to ride 5 rides but we bought season passes since we live so close so we can go back and ride other rides (or if there are other people who want to go with me they can). My favorite ride was called Deja vu. Instead of starting by going forward over a hill it pulled you backwards and completely vertical so that you are facing the ground and then shoots you thru the ride. You go thru the ride and then end vertical again before it shoots you backwards thru the entire ride. We sat in the last car so when the car was vertical we were the highest in the air!!

Today I am planning on going back to Piedmont Park with one of my roommates for the Jazz Festival. Sounds like fun to me!!

Ok, so... getting the pictures up is taking sooo much longer than I thought... for some reason webshots isn't allowing me to put many pictures on at one time so I have some pictures up but I am hoping soon they will all be up there! Sorry for the delay!!

I have added the link for the pictures next to the other picture links.

Come Back, Back to JAMAICA!!

Oh, what a fun vacation!! By now I should have all my pictures uploaded so now I am just waiting for the rest of the pictures to be emailed to me and then they will be added as well. So... please check out the link!!

It was so beautiful the whole trip!! We got into Jamaica on Wednesday and were at the resort by 1:00pm (Jamaica time). It didn't take long and we found everyone in the dining room getting some lunch. Right after lunch we all went on the Booze Cruise, out into the ocean. There was water splashing up everywhere so no pictures were taken during the cruise, but we went out quite a ways and the water was so blue and clear it was amazing!! It was so pretty to see the island from the ocean as well. Then on the way back they anchored the boat and we were all able to jump off and go swimming!!

Later that night four of us went to Ocho Rios to go to Margaritaville. It was the best bar I have ever been to because there was a waterslide in the middle of the bar! Of course us girls had to warm up the slide... we were the first in the bar that night to go down the slide and then we went down quite a few more times!! There was also a swim-up bar that we went to!! So FUN! I am waiting on the pictures from this part of the trip yet... I saw them still on the camera and they looked good!!

The next day was the wedding... CONGRATULATIONS ANGIE & KEVIN. A lot of pictures were taken and quite a few of them are already posted.

In the morning we all ate breakfast together and then after breakfast I went snorkeling for the first time... and I really didn't enjoy it too much because I was having a hard time with the snorkel... I couldn't breathe out of it very well and kept getting salt water in my mouth (not too tasty)! But we did not leave the shallow water (I could stand at any point without a problem) and there was a lot of coral and fish to look at it was still quite fun!

Mid-afternoon was the wedding which was on the beautiful, sandy beach!! It was very pretty!! Check out the pictures, they explain it much better than I can! Then at night we all went to the Italian restaurant for dinner, it was very good!!

There was another resort that was affiliated with the resort that we stayed at that was quite close so Thursday night we took a taxi ride over to that resort. Lets just say it was a little more... risque... than the resort we stayed at and it was considered to be a "couples" resort. I liked the fact that this one had a water slide in it (which ours didn't have) but it was turned off by the time we got there. It also had a pool table inside the pool... which I found quite cool!

When we got back to our hotel there was a piano bar that was still open and there was another wedding party singing karaoke to the piano music so we sat there for quite a while and listened to the music. It was so much fun to sing along and listen to all the singers!! There were some people who did a really good job!

On Friday morning, after breakfast, we went snorkeling again and this time I had a lot more fun! I was starting to get a handle on the snorkel so we were able to go out a little further and see some more fish! It was so pretty and so relaxing to be out there with all the schools of fish swimming around the mounds of coral!

In the afternoon, Stucky, the taxi driver, took us to Ocho Rios to see the shops and Angie got her hair braded. It is much different shopping there than in the States. First, the small shops are all in a gated area with guards at the entrance. All the workers are willing to bargain with you and everyone is going to give you "the best deal." By the end of the shopping trip we got tired of people following us around... but we did get some good deals on Jamaican merchandise!! There was one really funny story from the shopping trip though...

While shopping I really needed to use the restroom, so I found the ladies room and went in. I was first I was impressed with the cleanliness of the restroom itself. I then picked a stall and went in but when trying to lock the door I was having a hard time. So, I thought I would just leave it unlocked, but that didn't work because it would swing wide open. I finally was able to move the door so that I could get the lock in.

After I was done and I went to flush the toilet with my foot but it would not flush. There was a sign on the back of the stall saying "Please Flush Toilet" so I assumed the problem was it was a hard toilet to flush so I pushed a little harder. At that point the entire back of the toilet, where the handle was, broke and water started flying everywhere!! It took me a second to realize what was going on and then turn around. Remember how much work I put into locking the bathroom stall door... well, it was just as difficult to get it unlocked!!! By the time I was able to get the stall door unlocked and out of the bathroom the entire back side of me was soaked!!

I ran out of the bathroom and I was laughing so hard!! Cliff was standing outside the door waiting for me and he actually had the camera out and took my picture as I was laughing. He asked me what I was doing and as I started to tell the story water came pouring out from under the bathroom door!!! We quickly left and went to the first shop to tell them what had occurred. Luckily the manager of all the shops was standing right there and she went to stop the flood! Needless to say I smelled awful but was able to find a new (much better smelling) skirt to buy and wore that for the rest of the shopping trip!!

After we got back from shopping I needed to take a shower so I did that then took an afternoon nap. I forgot how wonderful an afternoon nap can be!! We all met up again for dinner that evening at the buffet. After dinner four of us played pool for quite a while and then the people who had to leave the next morning went to bed. The rest of us went to the beach, sat on the chairs, looked at the stars, and listened to the waves until we fell asleep. It was an amazing way to fall asleep!!

Saturday we all ate breakfast again together and then most people had to take off to the airport. The 2 of us that were left went snorkeling again!!! This time we went out quite a ways, to where there was approximately a 40 foot drop, mountains of coral, and beautiful, brightly-colored fish everywhere!! It was the most amazing sight!! Being in the water like that was so calming but seeing all that beauty was exhilarating. I think I could get used to eating my breakfast by the ocean and going snorkeling every morning!! We were out there for about an hour before we started getting tired. We made our way back to the beach to relax but only stayed there for a short time before deciding we needed to go back out again! We did the same stretch of coral but being that it was later and there had been a few boats that had gone by it stirred up the sand and it wasn't nearly as clear... but it was still beautiful!!

After all that snorkeling we were so exhausted that a relaxing nap in the hammock was required. I have decided that I want to get a hammock for at home!! It was a nice nap to take. The hammock was in the shade and I wanted to get some more sun so we went back to the beach and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon either relaxing in the water or relaxing on a chair. It was the perfect way to spend the last day in Jamaica! Yeah mon!

At night we got dressed up and watched the sun set on the beach (I took quite a few pictures of this and they turned out beautiful) and then went back to the Italian restaurant for dinner. I thought the food there was very good! After dinner we changed and went back to the beach and spent the rest of the night looking at the stars and listening to the water again. We fell asleep out there again!!

On Sunday morning we had to have our bags outside the room by 8am and we had to be on the bus by 9am so we got up at 7am. After getting packed up we had breakfast and then went on the beach until it was time to go. The bus ride took quite a while because we stopped at a couple other resorts on the way to pick up additional passengers, still we got to the airport and got checked in with a couple hours to wait but there were a lot of little duty-free shops to look around in so we had fun doing that!!

The flight back was very uneventful but the same can not be said about the time in the Atlanta airport. We got off the plane and had to go thru customs and show our passport. Then we had to go to the international luggage claim to pick up our bags. Everyone had to get their bags at the international luggage claim even if they had a connecting flight. So we waited, and waited, and waited for over an hour before the bags started to arrive. Once we got our bags we had to go thru customs again to have them checked and then drop them back off to go thru the metal detectors.

Once we got thru all of that we got on the airport shuttle to go to the second baggage claim but when we got on an announcement came across stating that the train was broken but would be fixed shortly. We sat there for a few minutes, then debated walking the mile or so to the terminal but during the debate the train started working again. We finally got to the luggage carousel but our luggage wasn't there yet. We waited, and waited, and waited some more. By the time we got the luggage, got to the bus, and got to the car we had waited longer in the airport then it took us to fly! But, I guess you can't feel too sorry for us, I mean, it's a small price to pay for an excellent vacation in Jamaica!!

IRIE!!

Are you guys having a killer time?

I am so excited... next Wednesday is JAMAICA!! We leave early in the AM on Wednesday and should arrive to the hotel around 1 (hopefully). I am so excited to go and also I am standing in my friends wedding. All last weekend I shopped and shopped for a dress but it was so hard to pick out 1 when I am not sure exactly what the wedding dress looks like so I decided to pack a couple of dresses and let her pick which one would go best.

Last weekend my roommate's parents were in town so we took them around the town a little bit. One place they really liked is called Harry’s Market... it's got a ton of fresh food and foods from around the world, a lot that you wouldn't find in a regular supermarket. It was a lot of fun to see them again.

We have another new roommate! Another former co-worker from Michigan has decided to move down to the ATL. He had been looking around Michigan for a while trying to find a job there but the market up there is so terrible that he wasn't finding anything (I can relate, it took me 6 months and a huge stack of resumes before I found the job I had up there – and in a month here had 2 offers) so he moved down here and is looking for something and he is hoping it will be quick... his wife and children are excited to be moving down here once he gets his job.

I don't feel very good...

The pollen count today is 5000+. If you ever have seen a pollen meter... what is considered extremely high is... 150. Which is totally ridiculous!! For those who are ever so lucky to not have allergies, what a 5000+ allergy count means is that I am feeling like crap. I took a shower just a minute ago to get some of the pollen off me and my headache has gone down some. What also stinks is that this is the perfect open window weather but with all of us having allergies none of us can really have the windows open.

Onto a much brighter note, the weekend trip to Florida was very nice. We left Friday night after I got out of work (around 7:30pm). We were going to take my car but one of the roommates just got a new jeep that he really wanted to take on the trip so we took that instead. He drove it out of Atlanta and then I got into the drivers seat and drove until about 1:30am. We stopped for the night at a Howard Johnson and the next morning we found out why you should never have the HoJo Breakfast! But, Saturday morning we drove the rest of the way to Cocoa Beach and spent a couple hours relaxing on the beach and jumping in the waves. The weather was fabulous!! It was probably about 85 degrees and the ocean was quite wavy which made for the perfect beach combination. And, we were not the only ones who thought the same thing... the beach was packed!

I talked to my mom when we got down there and found out that where we were was only about 1 mile from where my great-grandparents used to winter. I had been to their apartment once when I was 9 and remember loving the fact that their apartment was right on the ocean! After the beach we walked to the Ron Jon's and did a little shopping. It is such a cute store!!

After shopping we got back into the Jeep and headed to Orlando. We met a guy we used to work with back in Michigan, his wife, and their 2 year old daughter. We had a lot of fun seeing them all again. Saturday night we went out for dinner then to an outlet mall. But, this was unlike any outlet mall I had ever been to before... since it had company stores for such name brands as Burberry and Fendi. I had a lot of fun looking at those stores but shopping in some other stores that I actually could afford and managed to pick myself up some new skirts.

On Sunday we all went to Gatorland and saw a TON of gators! We were even able to feed some of them!! When we fed them there was a guide who showed us where to stand and we threw smelly, rotten chicken to the gators. But, when we were feeding them there were probably 20-30 gators wanting some chicken so it was really cool to see them all so close up.

After Gatorland we went back to the hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon at the pool. This pool was unlike most hotel pools that I have been in because it had a waterfall! I had a lot of fun swimming under the waterfall!

I there are a few pictures that we took that I will eventually get posted on the picture link but not tonight… its about time for me to go relax for the evening!

I caught you a delicious bass.

Hello again! So, this past week has been gone by quite quickly.

I started out the week needing to get my drivers side window fixed. I don't remember if I said anything in the blog about it before but for about the past month or so it would not go up or down. I was telling one of the guys that I work with about my car and he said he knew a little bit about fixing them and he would help me out. So he narrowed down all the possibilities that it could be to the switch itself and thought we could find a new piece in the junk yard. We (well, mostly he… but I did call a couple places too) called around to different junk yards close to here without much luck.

He did find a dealership that had the part but it was more than he thought I should pay and if it didn't work they have a policy of no returns on parts so I would be stuck with an extra part. After talking to the dealership they said to just bring the car in and they would let us know if it is really was that piece and if so I would buy it from them. After taking it to the dealership the salesman also thought it was that part but took my car to the body shop to test the motor before replacing the part. When he came back he had gotten it fixed!!! I guess the whole time the motor was just stuck… they tapped the inside of my car door and it started working again!! I was so excited that it's working I have been putting my window up and down every day ever since! Another plus, it was fixed for FREE! I love that price!!

We will be taking my car down to Florida for the weekend getaway so that make the fact that the window is working that much better. I am excited to see some friends that I haven’t seen in a while and to get down to palm trees, a little warmer weather, and beaches!!

Also going on this week I have a couple doctors appointments. One of the appointments was to get my allergies tested again. So, to get them tested I couldn't take my medicine for the past week. Needless to say, I haven’t been feeling the greatest because of that. Well, the allergy appointment was on Wednesday. On Monday afternoon, while I am at work, they leave a message on my answering machine stating that the doctors hours have changed and he wouldn't be in on Wednesdays anymore and they would need to change my appointment. She also noted that they could have me come in Tuesday. But, by the time I got out of work they were already closed. And, with not being on medicine, I really didn’t want to go thru another week of feeling sick without medicine. Another side note, I need to go in at 8am so I don't miss work because it is a 2 hours procedure from getting tested to talking to the doctor.

So, on Tuesday morning I decided to take my chances and go at 8am just in case they still had an opening. I got there and they don't open until 9am!! I was soooo frustrated. So at 9 I called them (I also tried before that but they don’t have an answering machine, I could have paged the doctor but didn't find this to be that kind of emergency) to talk to them about my frustrations and luckly they ended up letting me keep my Wednesday appointment. I got all my allergies tested and found out that, yes, I am allergic to that. Basically the nurse told me that I am allergic to just about everything I was tested for. For being pollen season down here and because the pollen is all over everything I think I should be feeling a LOT more sick that what I am for all the allergies that I have but I will talk to the doctor about that next week when I see him.

So, that has been the drama of my life for this week. I am sure next week will bring more... hehe.

"Your Mom goes to college."

So, since my last update I have been keeping fairly busy. It was cool enough and rained enough in the last week that I was only able to go running outside one day. The rest of the week I did weight training, pilates, and some other aerobics.

This weekend I haven't been feeling too good. Not really sick... but coughing a little and my nose and throat have been feeling funny. Luckily this week I (finally) have my allergy appointment! But, for now, I have been trying to lay low and relax. Watched a few movies... Napoleon Dynamite, The Whole Nine Yards, and Punch Drunk Love. I love Napoleon and the Whole Nine Yards... can watch them over and over! I hadn't seen Punch Drunk Love before but fell asleep half way thru so I don't remember too much of it. Will have to watch it again sometime.

Next weekend the roommates and I go to Florida!! We are meeting a people we all used to work with back in Michigan so it will be nice to see them again! It will also be fun to spend some time at the beach again!! We are going to Orlando but we are planning on going to the ocean since one of my roommates has never been there. Hopefully we will take some pictures and I will add them here.

Well, I am getting hungry... time for some lunch!!

Weekly Update!

It has been so long that I am calling this one the weekly update!!

I have been crazy busy lately trying to get all my normal things done... I had been putting off so much stuff since I knew my schedule would be changing at work and wanted to do it when I had time in the morning. So... since that started last week I have been running around doing taxes, getting doctor appointments, cleaning up this and that, running miscellaneous errands... it has been busy!

Last weekend we went hiking on a mountain close to where we live, it was pretty cool!
We have been doing some hiking since I have been down here so we got hiking boots... we each tried to break them in on this past hike so we didn't go very far as compared to previous trips because our feet hurt! We are planning on going back next weekend to try to break them in again. We live somewhat close to the end of the Appalachian Trail so by the fall we want to be able to hike for maybe a weekend up there. Also, the good pictures come from the Application Trail area... it is beautiful. Three of us went there last fall and it was so beautiful we took a ton of pictures. We are trying to get to the point where we can hike 15 miles or more in a day (although last weekend we went like 5). It’s nice down here already so that makes the hiking trips very nice.

I found out in the last week that people at my work are in a basketball league so last night I went to the game. There are both guys and girls on the team so I was able to play too. I had so much fun! Since I haven't played basketball in so long I forgot how much fun it is to play. Its nice too because I have been doing a lot of running lately just to get into shape so that helped when I played basketball but I was still really winded. Also, I found that I need to practice my shooting! Will have to find a park close to here and get a basketball and shoot away!

The weather report… it was beautiful most of the week last week and on Saturday which made for a beautiful hike. Then it rained all day Sunday and got pretty chilly yesterday (well, at least chilly for us – mid-50’s). Today it is sunny and supposed to be back in the 70’s and stay that way for most of the week! I am very excited about that!!

Quick Add

I have added my last day of pictures to my Florida section. I did however, get more pictures from Joe and my parents of the rest of their trip which I will also try to add soon!

No one posting??

Well, after looking at everyone elses blog I don't feel so bad about not posting for the past week. It must be a really, really busy time of year! Anyway, I have been busy with the new job and all.

But... this week I did watch a new movie... recommended to me by none other than Dan and Joe... Napoleon Dynamite!!! I laughed SO hard at that movie. It is so dumb but so funny and so easy to quote!! Yesss!

Long time... no post!

So, I have been quite busy in the last week... again.

To cap up the Florida vacation... it was sunny, it was warm, I was on the beach, and it was nice to spend some time with the family!! If you haven't checked out the pictures yet they are cute! Also, I don't have all the pictures yet... we did take some pictures around the town of Venice (which is where my grandparents are) but didn't have time to get them off the camera and Joe did take some with a regular camera so he will need to get them developed... but I should eventually get all the pictures up on here.

This last week I have been learning a ton at work. It is crazy all the things I need to learn!! But it is nice having the opportunity to learn and to grow so I am having fun with that. Still it makes a lot less time for blogging!

Today is beautiful here and a roomate and I did go for a quick hike but didn't take a camera so no pictures of that. It was funny that there were no leaves on the trees yet but I bet they will be in the next month!

Quick Hi

Just wanted to throw in a quick "hello." I have been very busy lately... no time at work with all the training to jump onto the blog and do any real updates. And, after work, one of the guys we all used to work with from Michigan is down here this week for training so we have been having a lot of fun with him around.

But, the job is going really well so far and I am excited to be going to FLORIDA in 1 more day!!

julie & brittany

AHHH - I found out last night that I missed Julie and Brittany in town this weekend!! I need to get better at checking my voicemail messages! I guess they decided on Friday to come to Atlanta to check out some colleges for Brittany. I had my phone by me all weekend but had it on vibrate so I never heard it ring. I am so disappointed that I missed them!!

I watched the Academy Awards (Oscars) last night. I love watching the award shows to see all pretty dresses! I was crazy and stayed up to watch the very end. I am now sleepy this morning... oh well, its Monday so I would be sleepy anyway!

Fabulous!

So yesterday I wanted to go downtown to a place called Fatburger that a friend of mine from work told me about. She told me it is the best burger in the ATL. So, I looked up the address and drove my 2 roommates down with me. We drove down the whole street and didn't find the restaurant. So, since we were on the other side of ATL we decided to go to Manual's Tavern. It is a political pub that one of my roommates used to go to when he lived down here before. I ended up eating a burger and it was very good! Afterward we went to a fast food restaurant and got a vanilla ice cream cone... they have the best ice cream cones ever!! Don't remember the name of the place though. On the drive back home we went down the same street and on the way back we did see the Fatburger restaurant... it was really on another street and from the direction that we first came from there was absolutely no way to see it. Oh well, we will know for next time now.

It looks like a friend that we all used to work with is coming down today... they have work training and it will be right by where I work so it will be cool to see them. Since they will be in town for the week I have decided to get myself started packing this weekend for my Florida trip... so right now I am doing laundry (how exciting, right).

I am also watching MTV Cribs... and the last place they just showed was a guy's island. It was very cool!! Everything so tropical... Fabulous!

updated

Ok... so only 2 more days until I transfer to the new job. I am getting excited although I am a little nervous! But... in a week I will be in FLORIDA!! I am so ready to see family, lay on the beach, and enjoy some time off!!

I went to the allergist on Wednesday expecting to have all the routine pokes and whatnot that help determine exactly what my allergies are but nope... it was a preliminary visit... it would have made me very upset but the weather on Wednesday was sunny, beautiful, and over 70 degrees so it was a perfect day to have a half day off!

Also on Wednesday I applied for my passport. I have been asking around and some people were saying that I need it... others were saying that I just need my birth certificate and a drivers license. I decided to play it safe and get the passport. It is so easy to get... just grabbed the forms from online, filled them out, went to the post office, got my picture taken there and the passport will be sent to me within 6 weeks.

Crazy Weather!!

Oh my, oh my. The weather down here has been crazy!! Yesterday it was in the 70's (loving that)... during the day it was very foggy and rainy. Then, as I was getting out of work the sun came out, the clouds were gone and it was beautiful... so I went for a run! Shortly after my run my roommates and I went to Barnes & Noble and as we were leaving the bookstore the tornado sirens starting going off!! The sky got very black and all over the Atl there was thunderstorms and hail. At that point I got really nervous... we were outside as all this was happening. Luckily though nothing too terrible happened and looking outside right now it is absolutely gorgeous again!! It is supposed to get up to 70 degrees again today!!

I found out what my new work hours are going to be for my new job... once I have been trained I will be working 10am - 7pm. Not as great at my 8am - 5pm shift but I am now the new person again so I will work my way back to the better hours! With the new locations opening (we are opening in Chicago right now and soon somewhere in California) I am thinking there will be more positions opening and then I can get a better shift.

I think tonight I may be going out for sushi again tonight... I am looking forward to trying it again. I had a lot of fun last time!! I will have to try to get back onto the blog again sometime this week to update (much harder when I am training someone and they have control of the computer... but oh well).

Looking forward to seeing my family in FLORIDA soon!!!
